With Memorial Day weekend behind us, the countdown to summer has officially begun but for many women, it’s the precursor to swimsuit season. As a fashion blogger, I love being able to style outfits that inspire you all to go outside your comfort zone and try it yourself. As a woman, especially, a full figured woman, I do face body challenges just like everyone else.
Let’s get personal: Do you know I weigh more now than I did when I was 9 months pregnant with my daughter? Yup, no exaggeration. However, at the same time, I’ve never been as confident as I am at this weight than any other time in my life. Why is that? Because I love me…all of me even the pesky cellulite and sneaky varicose veins. Yea, I’d take blemish free skin any day, but I choose not to dwell on the things I can’t change and more-so on being happy.
The best confidence booster for me is to look good-meaning grooming (the shaving, waxing, primping and propping) and dressing nicely, which during the summer, includes in a swimsuit. Even I hesitate about being half naked on a beach or pool, however by picking the right swimsuit to emphasize my appealing body parts and de-emphasizing the not so great ones, I was able to find a great swimsuit from Target’s Ava and Viv plus size line, after many a trial and error.
We all know plus size comes in various sizes, and it just so happens that Target’s AVA and VIV line offers curve friendly swimsuits that look great both in and out the water for plus size women of every size. As you see below, I went through quite a few swimsuits in variations to find one that I was not only comfortable with, but flattered my shape. Unfortunately, my Target location was sold out in many pieces I saw online (where there are many more options for us).
While I usually would be more drawn to a 2 piece with a high waist bottom, surprisingly enough I loved the retro style of the 1 piece. The ruching on the side and pattern placement helped with camouflaging the tummy area-my problem spot- while the halter top style allows me to choose the amount of bust support needed all the while giving off a somewhat pin-up vibe.
How cute are my accessories?! I love the colorful tassels of my beach bag and no summer is complete without a panama hat. I usually go with a neutral shade, but this white one worked perfectly! Not to mention, equally stylish casually paired with jeans or dress. I also had my eye out for this Ava and Viv coverup which I had planned on doubling up as a top with shorts or as a kaftan with a basic tank dress underneath-but that too was sold out at my location (tip: better to just shop online).
I took my swimsuit out for a spin during memorial day weekend while sun bathing on my building rooftop in true NYC fashion. I expected it to be not so crowded but was surprised with neighbors grilling, children playing tag, and strangers taking in the city sights. A few years ago, I would’ve shied away from being half naked in front of strangers, but I l felt confident enough to not care.
Conquering swimsuit season isn’t just about overcoming body insecurities, it’s about building confidence, having fun and letting your personality shine. Whether you’re in a two piece or 1 piece stunner, I encourage you all to free your mind of insecurities and bask in the glow of not just the sun, but your self-love. Let’s make this summer unforgettable!
